We played with Phil and Friends a couple weeks ago! Here’s Elliott singing “Miss Ohio”.

We helped our good friend Toby Oler, who played banjo on “Days I’m Blue” with his latest record, OVTOV. Toby recorded most of the tracks in our studio while I played a variety of instruments and Elliott contributed her voice. The Bay Bridged wrote a nice review.

Here’s a snippet:

Oler wrote all eight songs on OVTOV, but brought in musicians from a variety of Bay Area bands to help record them, including Elliott Peck and Connor O’Sullivan of Dem Suite, Michael James Tapscott of Odawas, and Matt Nelson of tUnE-yArDs. He described the process as a musical version of “Stone Soup,” where Oler brought the songs (the pot) and let his fellow musicians put their own spin on things (the ingredients and spices).

On each track, Oler and his diverse team of musicians never manage to fall into a specific genre, which is a good thing. They are free to experiment and take chances at every turn, while managing to produce music that isn’t just listenable, but is pretty damn catchy. Below, you can stream three songs that show the range of Oler’s great songwriting on OVTOV.

Our friend, Goyo, who played the hang drum on our song “Have A Good Youth”, just released his debut album. Goyo plays some pretty unusual acoustic instruments on this album. The vocals on this cut, “Ashra”, are just stunning. The more I play with Odawas the more I’m gettin into this new-age-ambient-meditation-vibe. Goyo gave me the track stems and asked if I’d remix some of the tunes, which I did. My “Ashra” remix made the cut.

The final track on this album and another tune we worked on at the Dabblewood compound and studio in Mendocino, CA following our 2008 Pacific Northwest Tour. Again I was able to record the guitar with Matt’s Stratocaster that he left we us after the tour. This song started with the 6/8 beat and the pulsing Nord Lead chords. Because of that it was originally called 1968. The song developed over next couple years with Elliott writing the NYC-inspired story for the lyrics.

Beneath The Trees
We wrote and recorded the demo for this song immediately following our 2008 Pacific Northwest Tour during a relaxing week at the Dabblewood compound and studio in Mendocino, CA. I had Matt’s Stratocaster with us after we parted ways following the last show and wrote the guitar arpeggio to get the tune going.
We visited the Seattle Music Experience earlier in the tour and were definitely inspired by the Seattle bands of the 90’s on this one. The original recording had some magic to it that I’m not 100% sure we were able to capture once we rerecorded it 2 years later in San Francisco, but the final version is bigger, has more energy and is generally more polished.

Have A Good Youth
This song was inspired by a very strange voicemail left by a crazy old tenant of a friend of ours. The tenant ended the voicemail by saying “OK Fritz, have a good youth!” Thus a song seed was born. Originally we had the voicemail playing over the ambient intro, but then I decided to remove all other voices and vocals from the album except for Elliott’s. Listen to the original voice message.

Canis Minor
Legit 808 throughout - I had an 808 in the studio for a weekend and recorded this song. Originally it was called “Deluxe” because I used my new-at-the-time Fender Deluxe amplifier to record the Jaguar loop and the Wurlitzer piano you hear spaced out in the background. Elliott still calls this song “Deluxe”. The lyrics tell the tale of someone teetering on the edge of alcoholism and occasional bouts of sobriety. Canis Minor is the “lowly dog” constellation which, to me, fits perfectly with the image of the alcoholic.
